Competitive Team Sign-Up
New members can sign up for our competitive teams at any time during the semester by speaking to the President, Vice President or Practice Coordinator. You must pay the competitive club fee before you can issue or be subjected to any challenges.
Membership Information
Competitive members: Travel to 2–3 tournaments each semester across Texas and other parts of the country, where we compete against other club teams. Competitive players are placed on teams based on our ladder. New and existing members may challenge each other for a spot on the ladder. See Challenge Rules for more information.
All competitive players must attend practice at least once a week. Failure to do so may result in losing eligibility to participate in tournaments.
Please be aware that signing up does not guarantee you a spot on our competitive teams. If you are not currently on a team, you will need to rely on challenges to secure one.
Recreational members: May attend our Monday practices, socials, fundraisers, and volunteer events! Recreational members can join practice as their schedule allows; however, we encourage them to attend as often as possible.
Recreational members may attend competitive practices (Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday) by paying the Competitive member fee. Participation in competitive events is entirely optional.
Dues
Dues (club fees) are due two weeks after the first day of the semester. New members enjoy a 2-week grace period from their first day of practice free of charge. We encourage students to attend both types of practices (competitive and recreational) to see which option fits them best.
Spring 2026 Dues: Due Saturday, January 31.
Competitive members: $50 per semester. This includes access to practices, socials, volunteer events, and ladder challenges. Members attending tournaments must pay an additional fee, usually around $50-100 per tournament (we are actively working to lower this cost!). This covers hotel, gas, and tournament entry fees. Anyone can attend competitive practices as long as they pay the competitive fee regardless of whether they want to compete or not.
Recreational members: $30 per semester or $50 per year. This includes access to Monday practices, socials, and volunteer events.
Payment Instructions
Cash or check payments must be made directly to the President or Treasurer.
Cash App, PayPal or Zelle payments can be made at any time by requesting the link/QR code from the President/Treasurer or by clicking the provided hyperlinks.
Unfortunately, the club does not accept Apple Pay, or any other payment methods not listed above.
Tournaments are held on Saturdays and Sundays (and occasionally on Fridays), with the Sectional and National Championships taking place during the spring semester. For more information about tournament dates and locations, please refer to our official Tournament Schedule.
Travel with the club!
Tournaments are hosted in different cities across the country by other club teams. Since the University of Texas at El Paso is located far from most other clubs, we typically leave a day before the tournament begins and return on Sunday after it ends. Travel arrangements are overseen by the President, Vice President, and Secretary. These arrangements include rides for members to and from the tournament, as well as hotel accommodations. Rooms are divided by gender, with 4–5 members per room. More information can be found on the Tennis Club at UTEP Constitution.
Competitive Teams
The Tennis Club at UTEP currently supports four teams (A, B, C and D). These are formed based on our ladder system, which ensures you will be playing against others at your level. The top-ranked players on the ladder are assigned to A Team, while the lower-ranked players are assigned to B, C and D Team respectively. Each team is overseen by a Team Captain, who is chosen and supervised by the President.
Tournament Format
Larger clubs often send multiple teams to each tournament, resulting in multiple draws. The strongest teams are placed in the top draws, while the lower-ranked teams are placed in the draws that follow. For example, Team A would be placed in the top draw, and Team B would be placed in the one after.
Each match is played against another club tennis team, with a lineup that consists of:
1 men’s doubles
1 women’s doubles
1 men’s singles
1 women’s singles
1 mixed doubles (played last)
Tournament Scoring
Tournaments are played using World Team Tennis scoring:
One set (first to 6 games) per-match; switch sides every 4 games.
At 5–5, play a sudden-death tiebreak: first to 5 points, win by 1. Switch servers every 2 points; the final server serves 3 points. Change sides every 4 points.
Players may be substituted. Each player may compete in up to two events.
If total games are tied, play a tiebreaker to 7 (win by 1).
Overtime: If your team wins mixed doubles (the last match played), play continues even if you are behind in total games. You play until you either catch up to the other team or lose a game.
The team with the highest total games after all matches are completed wins.
